BHAGALPUR: Irate residents blocked road and damaged over two dozen trucks passing through the town areas on Saturday night after three persons were crushed to death and one was grievously injured by a speeding truck near the Bhagalpur Municipal Corporation (BMC) under Adampur police station. They were also demanding to ban entry of trucks and other heavy commercial vehicles in town areas.

According to police sources, three persons----- Arun Modi (45 years), Sanichar Saha (30 years) and Narayan Mandal (50 years) -came under the wheels of a truck, whereas Bijay Chourasia and two others were grievously injured when the speeding truck was passing through the town towards Vikramshila Setu after the 'no entry' hours was lifted. Sources said that hundreds of trucks queue up at the entry points near Bhagalpur and Naugachia to cross the Vikramshila Setu, across the Ganga, connecting NH-80 with NH-31 which often results in massive traffic snarl extending to several kilometres and spills over to city areas.
Traffic jams have intensified due to diversion of heavy commercial vehicles that use to cross the Ganga via Farakka bridge (Murshidabad district in West Bengal) in order to go to Assam and other places. Farakka bridge, across the Ganga, is nearly 150km away from Vikramshila Setu and has been closed for heavy commercial vehicles as the bridge is under repair.
