Cyclonic rains 'shower' fish on Andhra's Amalapuram

Residents of Amalapuram were up for a surprise after they witnessed "fish rain", a rare meteorological phenomenon, as cyclone Phethai made a landfall in coastal Andhra. A video of the "fish rain" has been going viral on the social media since Monday evening.

VISAKHAPATNAM: Residents of Amalapuram were up for a surprise after they witnessed "fish rain", a rare meteorological phenomenon, as cyclone Phethai made a landfall in coastal Andhra. A video of the "fish rain" has been going viral on the social media since Monday evening.
The rare phenomenon happens when strong winds of cyclonic storms like Phethai sometimes carry displaced fish, frogs from the water bodies and drop on the land.

According to sources, a resident of Amalapuram captured the video of the "fish rain" at around 4pm and circulated it among his friends.
The video finally reached to the social media as well as the mainstream media.

Speaking to TOI, the man who shared the video through a WhatsApp group said that he got the video from his friend from Amalapuram. He said that nearly 100 fish, locally called as "Gidasalu" in Telugu dropped on the land along a canal in front a municipal school when the cyclone was making landfall in Yanam, which is close to Amalapuram.
A meteorologist from Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said that strong winds of the storms like Cyclone Phethai sometimes carry displaced fish, frogs from the water bodies and drop on the land.
