One person dead after chase ends with crash into utility pole, several without power

A vehicle chase that began in the Town of Burke ended with a person dead and nearly 2,000 people without power on Madison's North Side Tuesday night.

According to the Dane County Sheriff's Office, a deputy was trying to stop a vehicle for speeding on U.S. Highway 51 near County Highway CV around 8:20 p.m. The vehicle did not pull over and continued to speed down CTH CV, approaching speeds of 100 miles per hour.

Authorities say the deputy ended the high-speed chase near Fieldstone Lane in the Town of Burke. The deputy continued to follow and lost sight of the vehicle near Wheeler Road in Madison. The vehicle crashed into a utility pole near Wheeler and Delaware Roads.

Two people inside the vehicle were taken to UW Hospital for their injuries. Madison police have now confirmed that one person has died from their injuries in the crash.

Madison Gas and Electric reported more than 1,900 people were without power around 8:24 p.m. The estimated restoration time is estimated to be 2:30 a.m. Wednesday for some residents.
