FAIZABAD: The photograph of Pakistan’s founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah during an event in Faizabad jail stirred a controversy on Wednesday with the local BJP MLA and VHP demanding action against the organisers and jail officers.
The event was organised as a tribute to the martyrdom of Ashfaqulla Khan, who was lodged in Faizabad jail for the Kakori train robbery of 1925.
He was hanged by the British on December 19, 1927.
Faizabad jail has a memorial site for Khan. Jinnah’s photograph was displayed on its outer wall alongside that of Bahadur Shah Zafar and Tipu Sultan and freedom fighters such as Maulana Abul Kalaam Azad and Maulana Hussain Ahmad Madani. The event was organised by the ‘Asfaqulla Khan Memorial Shaheed Shodh Sansthan’, which is managed by senior Communist leader Suryakant Pandey.Pandey defended the move saying: “The history of India’s freedom struggle is incomplete without Jinnah. He had a great role in the freedom movement and we must give credit to Jinnah for his contribution in the battle for Independence.”
However, VHP spokesperson Sharad Sharma said, “The organisers have committed a great crime by displaying the photo of a separatist and divisive person. CM Yogi Adityanath must take action against the organisers and jail administration.”
Local BJP MLA Ved Gupta said, “By displaying Jinnah’s photograph, the organisers have turned a tribute into a disputed event. By doing this, they want to come in the limelight, but this is not acceptable. We will take action against them.”
