NEW DELHI: A constable posted with the PCR unit suffered serious fractures after being dragged for several meters when he tried to stop a group of drunk youths. The accused were fleeing after they were caught drinking in their car near Punjabi Bagh on Wednesday afternoon. Police say that the men were chased and caught by the PCR and were found to be employees of a call centre in west Delhi.
Police recieved a call around 2.30pm by a passerby about a group of men making lewd gestures at women.
When the PCR team reached the scene, they found a Swift parked by the roadside in which the men were sitting.
DCP (west) Monika Bhardwaj said that constable Sandeep walked up to the left window and asked them to roll it down, but they refused to open it. The cop then walked up to the driver and tried to remove the keys from the steering socket, when the driver rolled up the window on the constable’s arm and started driving the car.
Sandeep was dragged for several meters before other policemen in the PCR caught up. They forced the driver to stop and freed Sandeep.
It was found that the men were drinking in the car and had planned to run over the policeman while fleeing. “The policeman was severely injured and was admitted to a hospital with injuries on his head, shoulder and arm,” said Bhardwaj.
Police said that the person sitting next to the driver and the one sitting behind him managed to flee from the scene. However, the driver — later identified as Gaurav Kumar — was held by PCR staffers and handed over to the local police. One of the associates, Bharat, was later caught from his house in Rajinder Nagar.
The men have been booked for attempt to murder and causing grievous hurt to a public servant in the discharge of his duty.
