UM quarterback N’Kosi Perry again at center of social media firestorm after report of ‘inappropriate’ video

For the second time this season, Hurricanes quarterback N’Kosi Perry has been caught in a social media firestorm.

On Friday afternoon, Miami issued a statement saying it was aware of an inappropriate video involving one of its athletes after UM’s school newspaper — The Miami Hurricane — reported the existence of a sexually explicit 10-second video that was posted to Perry’s Snapchat account within hours of Miami’s 49-24 win over Toledo on Sept. 15.

“We are aware of an inappropriate video posted on a social media account associated with one of our student-athletes. The video has been removed and the posting has been addressed with the student-athlete. We will continue to be committed to high standards of conduct at UM,” the school’s full statement read.

A UM spokesman also said that Perry — who has played in 10 games and started six, including the Hurricanes’ past three games against Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech and Pittsburgh — will be traveling to New York for Miami’s Dec. 27 game against Wisconsin in the Pinstripe Bowl.

This season, Perry — who has completed 52 percent of his passes for 1,089 yards with 13 touchdowns and five interceptions — did not travel to Arlington, Texas for Miami’s season opener against LSU while serving a one-game suspension for violating an undisclosed team rule.

He is one of three Hurricanes quarterbacks that has been suspended at some point this season, with freshman Jarren Williams missing the Virginia Tech game after, he too, violated an undisclosed team rule and redshirt freshman Cade Weldon serving a four-game suspension midseason.

Whether Perry will face any discipline for this issue, as of Friday afternoon, was unclear, with Miami specifying only that he was traveling to New York. It is, however, the second time this season the redshirt freshman has found himself involved with a questionable online video.

In October, Perry drew the ire of Hurricanes coach Mark Richt after posting a video of himself flashing wads of cash while riding in a car.

After that video surfaced on Instagram, Richt said the issue had been addressed with Perry and Miami had done its due diligence to make sure the quarterback had not violated any NCAA rules.

“It was not very mature obviously,” Richt said of the October video. “He didn’t break any laws. He didn’t break any NCAA rules. He’s in good standing, but the image is not good. We don’t like that. He’s just got to be more mature and more wise with what he does. I didn’t like it. He knows that. He knows that it was not a very wise thing to do.”

This second video involving Perry is the latest incident in an eventful 10-day stretch for the Hurricanes that has included the departure of defensive coordinator Manny Diaz — who is taking over as head coach at Temple after coaching Miami in the Pinstripe Bowl — and uncertainty surrounding Williams’ future with the Hurricanes after recruiting website 247Sports.com reported Williams was transferring, then reported he was staying at Miami.

The Hurricanes, who posted a 7-5 regular-season record, are set to leave for the Pinstripe Bowl on Saturday.
