HOWRAH: Locals have unearthed a carcass racket in Howrah’s Belgachhia dumping ground early on Sunday. Police have arrested one person for his alleged involvement in the racket.
Accused Anup Dolui, an Ekbalpore resident, was severely beaten up when he, along with two others, came to the dumping ground under Liluah PS area early on Sunday morning to lift carcasses of dogs and take away two pigs that were roaming in the area.
He was later arrested and admitted to Howrah hospital with severe injuries.
Dolui later confessed that he used to pick carcasses from the spot and sell them to city hotels. Two of his aides, though, managed to flee the spot.
Recently, the state set up a committee to ensure food safety after a carcass racket was unearthed in Kolkata and adjoining districts.
At Howrah, the locals also set the taxi, in which Dolui was travelling, on fire. Earlier, some pigs were stolen from the dumping ground, forcing the locals to keep a vigil in the area.
Locals spotted a taxi arriving at the dumping ground, spread over two acres, around 4.30am. “Three men came out of the taxi and tried to take three carcasses of dogs. We were alerted by the screams of two pigs, which were being loaded onto the taxi. Soon, we chased them and nabbed Dolui,” said a local resident.

Dolui later told police that they used to pick carcasses from the dumping ground and sell them to restaurants in Kolkata. They also used to lift pigs from the dumpyard. The group would also kill stray dogs in the dumpyard and sell them to hotels and restaurants, Dolui reportedly told police.
Howrah city police said they would contact the Kolkata Police soon.
