One killed, six injured after cranes collapse at Kakinada Sea Port
Rescue operations were launched to bring out the workers trapped under the cranes.
KAKINADA: One person was killed and six others were injured when two huge cranes collapsed all of a sudden at Kakinada Sea Port Limited on Saturday morning. According to sources, more than 40 workers were attending the repair works at one of the cranes when the accident occurred.
Police sources said that the accident took place at berth number six where workers were involved in the repair works.
Another crane was also near this. The cranes were used for lifting the heavy machineries and other heavy material.
Port authorities rushed to the area and rescue operations were launched to bring out the workers trapped under the cranes. Port staff, police and fire tenders were rushed into the spot.
All the injured were shifted to a private hospital in Kakinada.
An ex gratia of Rs 15 lakh was announced to the family of the deceased worker. The injured will get Rs 2 lakh compensation. The port announced that it would bear the medical expenses of the injured.
Kakinada unit CITU general secretary Peddimsetty Ramakrishna Rao demanded permanent job for kin of the deceased. He accused the management of Kakinada deep sea port of negligence. He also alleged that labour rules were flouted by the port.
Meanwhile, tension prevailed at the port as some workers staged protest demanding better labour facilities. The police beefed up security following the mishap.
