VARANASI/LUCKNOW: A police constable was killed in stone pelting as a protest by Rashtriya Nishad Party (RNP) demanding reservation for Mallah community (fishermen) in Ghazipur turned violent on Saturday.
According to news agency ANI, police have registered FIR against 32 people in connection with the case.
According to sources, protesters targeted police and vehicles returning from PM’s rally and threw stones at the forces at Nauhara area.
Constable Suresh Vats (48) sustained head injuries when a stone hit him while he was clearing traffic blocked by RNP workers near Kathua turn.
Several people were injured and 15 RNP members were detained by police. CM Yogi Adityanath announced a compensation of Rs 40 lakh for the constable’s family and Rs 10 lakh for his parents. He also announced an extraordinary pension for his wife and a government job for one member of his family.
The CM also directed the district magistrate and SSP to look into the matter and immediately arrest those who indulged in stone pelting.

Police said around 4pm, SO Karimuddinpur and five constables, including Vats, were returning from PM’s rally in Ghazipur. When their unit reached Kathua Bridge, some RNP supporters, who were staging a demonstration, blocked the road.
SO Karimuddin and the constables tried to disperse the protesters and clear the route but the protesters turned violent and started pelting stones and also attacked cops with sticks. Vats suffered injuries while the assailants fled from the spot.
Vats was rushed to Ghazipur district hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
SP Ghazipur Yash Veer Singh said that 15 workers of the party have been detained. “We are checking the videos to identify people involved in pelting stones,” said Singh. Raids are being carried out across the district to nab the culprits. ADG (Law & Order) Anand Kumar said that police are keeping a close eye on law and order in the district.
