Delhi: Elaborate traffic arrangements in place for New Year's Eve

NEW DELHI: Avoid areas around Connaught Place or India gate on New Year's Eve as you are likely to get stuck in a snarl. The traffic police has made elaborate arrangements on various routes around these areas to ease out the traffic volume.
Cops would also crackdown on speeding, jumping red light, carrying persons in goods carriage, driving under the influence of liquor and drugs and using mobile phone while driving, their license will be suspended and impounded for a period not less than three months.

"Apart from being fined upto Rs 2,000, punishment of suspension of driving license and jail terms may also be awarded to the those who drive drunk," said BK Singh, additional commissioner of traffic.
Among several restrictions imposed in the heart of Delhi, no vehicle will be allowed to proceed towards CP beyond certain points including Mandi House, Bengali Market, DDU Marg crossing, GPO and Patel Chowk, said the officer.
The Delhi traffic police has advised the visitors to India gate to use public transport because of the acute shortage of the parking space. People have also been advised to avoid driving to India Gate and Delhi Zoo on January 1st to prevent re-run of last year's traffic snarl across the city.
These restrictions will be imposed from 8 PM onwards on Monday till the conclusion of new year celebrations. All private and public transport vehicles will come under the ambit of this plan, as per the traffic advisory, police officers say.


In addition to this, no vehicular traffic will be allowed in inner, middle or outer circle of Connaught Place. For the convenience of motorists, a few areas have been marked to park the vehicles near CP.
These include parking spaces near Gol Dak Khana, near Patel Chowk on Rakab Ganj Road behind AIR, near Mandi House on Copernicus Marg upto Baroda House, near Minto Road on DD Upadhaya Marg and Press Road area, Near Windsor Place among others.
Limited parking space will be available near Connaught Place on first come first serve basis. Unauthorized parked vehicles shall be towed away and prosecuted, as per the traffic police instructions.
Besides this, arrangements have also been made at places like Saket, Greater Kailash, Defence Colony, Nehru Place, Dwarka, Mayur Vihar Area and others which are susceptible to traffic jams.
Diversions will be made in these areas and local markets on the need basis and extra staff has been deployed at these places.
For hassle-free commuting, motorists have been advised to use alternative routes available for North-South and East-West directions.
According to the police, for those heading towards New Delhi Railway station, entry from Connaught Place - Chelmsford Road will be prohibited. As an alternative, motorists can take Second Entry Gate of Ajmeri Gate side. They can reach the station via Pahar Ganj - Shiela Cinema or through Ajmeri Gate - JLN Marg side via BSZ Marg - Delhi Gate - JLN Marg.
In co-ordination with local police and PCR, special pickets to check stunts on motorcycles, over speeding, reckless driving, zig-zag and dangerous driving will be placed at vulnerable locations.
