Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has commissioned a 800 MW thermal power unit within a record time of 46 months for Kothagudem Thermal Power Station of Telangana State Power Generation Corporation.

This is a marked improvement in the time taken to commission 800 MW sets till date in the country by various developers. Following the commissioning, the power plant has started commercial operation.

BHEL executed this project on an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) basis, which includes design, engineering, manufacture, supply, civil works, and erection and commissioning of steam turbines, generators, and boilers, besides controls and instrumentation and balance of plant (BoP) packages.

While the construction of the plant was undertaken by the company’s southern regional office, key equipment were manufactured at BHEL’s Tiruchi, Haridwar, Bhopal, Ranipet, Hyderabad, Jhansi, Thirumayam and Bengaluru plants.

Besides the 1x800 MW Kothagudem project, TSGenco had awarded the 5x800 MW Yadadri project and the 4x270 MW Bhadradari project to BHEL, which are under execution. In addition, BHEL is also executing the steam generator package of the 2x800 MW Telangana STPP for NTPC.

BHEL-supplied sets contribute to 88 per cent of the coal-based power stations installed in the State. Projects equipped with BHEL-supplied sets, such as Ramagundam and Kothagudem, have been consistently winning awards from the Ministry of Power for their outstanding performance.

BHEL is India’s largest manufacturer of power-generating equipment, with an installed base of more than 1,83,000 MW of equipment globally.

It has so far contracted 57 sets of supercritical boilers and 50 sets of supercritical turbine generators from various customers in the domestic as well as overseas markets.
