HUBBALLI: Karnataka’s northern most district Gadag, which was among four in the state to be selected for the Union government’s Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) programme, is now among the top performers in the country. The district will receive a national award for implementing the project effectively, said deputy commissioner MG Hiremath.
The Centre picked the district for the programme in 2015.
“Our officials put in sincere efforts in creating awareness on issues like child sex ratio and girl child education, and empowering girls through ‘information education communication (IEC)’ activities,” said Hiremath. He said he had received a letter from Ashok Kumar Yadav, deputy secretary of the BBBP project in the Union women and child development ministry on January 11, informing him of the honour.
Ramakrishna Padagannavar, deputy director in the women and child development department, said the child sex ratio was 947 in Gadag in the 2011 census. “As there was a considerable fall in the ratio compared to previous years, the Union government selected the district for 2017-18.
Though the action plan was prepared in January 2018, its implementation was deferred till June as the model code of conduct for the assembly elections was in force. DC Hiremath will receive the award on January 24 at a ceremony in New Delhi.
