eBay millionaires have long been making a name for themselves online, trawling through car boot sales and charity shops in search of hidden gems to sell to oblivious bargain hunters online.

But it's not just household antiques and your old iPhone that could fetch you some extra cash - your rubbish is worth real money too.

And we're not talking Blue-Planet-inspired-recycling - selling your unwanted toilet rolls on the internet has been proven to sell - and it's just as ethical for our oceans, too.

Deals hunters at My Favourite Voucher Codes ploughed through more than 2,000 listings on eBay to uncover the so-called 'rubbish' that sells online - and how much for.

Its report found more than 1,930 empty perfume bottles have sold over the past three months on eBay - for an average of £4.33 each. Unwanted glass, such as gin and vodka bottles, meanwhile, sold for £5.58 each.

But contrary to belief, empty (but usable) cardboard boxes are worth even more, with house-movers willing to pay £12.21 to get their hands on heaps of them. It ties in to 'paper bags' such as Gucci and Chanel ones, that fetch £4.55 on average.

Elsewhere, 37 sellers have managed to successfully flog toilet roll tubes - a popular craft item for kids - with the average amount earned £2.50 per batch. Jars such as Jo Malone empty candles and empty jam pots also bring in just under £6 - at £5.79 each.

And it's not just miscellaneous recyclables that people want - research shows that the average jewellery box, for brands such as Tiffany and Pandora, will net you £10.89 each.

But how can you make sure your rubbish sells?

There are ways to boost your listings - you just need to know the secrets (

"Make sure to get the important keywords into your listing title," explains My Favourite Voucher Codes founder, Julian House.

"So if you're selling Hendrick's gin bottles, rather than listing "Hendrick's bottles" mention words like "glass bottles" and "empty bottles", too. Ideally, your listing title might look something like "5 Empty glass Hendrick's gin bottles for sale - 35cl bottles." That way, you're more likely to show up in the results on eBay for people looking for "glass bottles", as well as for Hendrick's bottles specifically."

Julian also says it's important to sell in batches - people are shopping online because they need large volumes fast.

"Sell in multiples," he said.

"Lots of the listings we saw going for the highest values had multiples to offer. So rather than listing a single perfume bottle at a time, save a few up and pop them on at once. This job lot of empty Jewellery boxes from Tiffany and Links went for almost £50.

"It's also important to take a look at old listings that sold and look at the time of day they finished.

"When running an auction, you want as many people as possible available and online in those last couple of hours. Weekday evenings and weekends are often good times to schedule an auction to end."

When it comes to gaining the most traction, Julian says, the secret is all in the description.

"Populate your listing with a good description. Don't just go with one or two lines. The more information you include in that description, the better. Aim for a couple of paragraphs that explain exactly what you're selling, the condition and any other information the buyer should know."

Lastly, photos speak louder than words.

"Include clear photographs - as odd as it may seem to photograph your rubbish! Most smartphone cameras are good enough quality these days to get a high resolution image. So the main difference between a good photo and a bad one is likely to be the lighting. Try and take your photos against a relatively plain background with plenty of natural light. "
