HYDERABAD: Four students from Telangana — Adelly Sai Kiran, Yindukuri Jayanth Phani, Battepati Karthikeya, Vishwanth K secured 100 percentile marks (National Testing Agency score) in the JEE (Joint Entrance Examination Main) January-2019 examination, results of which are released on Saturday. Bojja Chetan Reddy, who secured NTA score of 100 is the only one from Andhra Pradesh to secure cent percentile marks.

Although ranks will be released only after the JEE (Main- II) April-2019 examination, based on the percentile, it can be said that candidates managed to put up a good show similar to last year’s. In 2018, five students from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh had figured in the top 10 list, in 2017 and 2016, the count was two and three respectively.

Elated with their performance, the toppers hope to eventually crack the Advanced exam as well and join the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay. Teaching faculty from coaching institutes, meanwhile, said that most of the students would prefer to appear for the examination (Mains-II), as the best of the two examinations will be considered to shortlist a candidate for the advanced examination.
“A student can appear for both the exams and the paper in which they score more marks will be considered. So, it would be wise to appear for the one in April so that there are better chances of getting shortlisted for the advanced examination,” said Ashok Kumar, IIT Coordinator of Narayana, whose student Sai Kiran secured a 100 percentile score. Experts also opined that students may get confused about understanding the percentile as no ranks have been declared.

“Candidates should not worry and should focus on April exam,” said Navin C Joshi, academic head and VP (JEE and NEET) at Gradeup.
Explaining how one can get an approximate idea about their all India rank, he said, “Let’s say a student's percentile is 99, this means that 1% of students have scored more marks. In this exam session, if 1,16,000 students appeared, this means that the rank in that session is approximately 1160 and overall rank is about 1160 multiplied by 8 (considering there were total 8 slots of the exam). This calculation will give an approximate idea about AIR (All India Rank) and not the correct rank. If a student is seeking admission in an NIT, then the percentile must be greater than 96.”
“We had started conducting online training classes since the year. This gave an extra edge to our students and helped them succeed in the online format,” said Sindhura Narayana, director Naryana Group.
