NASHIK: The police have detained two young couples from Bhosari in Pune for allegedly burying a four-month-old fetus in an open ground in the Killa area of Malegaon on Monday afternoon. The doctor who performed the illegal medical termination of pregnancy (MTP) is on the run.
Additional superintendent of police Neelotpal said a police team, which was tipped off by local residents, caught the two men while they were burying the fetus.

“The police have detained the two couples. We have seized the fetus and are in the process of sending it for DNA profiling. A formal FIR will be lodged against both couples under sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act,” Neelotpal said.
Police sources said one couple was married while the other was engaged and slated to marry soon. “However, the unmarried woman conceived and wanted to abort the fetus before her marriage. She travelled to Malegaon with her fiancé and the other couple where a medical termination of pregnancy was illegally done at a private hospital in the Kaulane area of rural Malegaon,” police sources said.
A group of locals alerted the police after they saw the two men digging the ground. The men had chosen a desolate place behind a godown to bury the fetus. “The doctor is on the run but we will nab him soon,” Neelotpal said.
