Heavy rain, thunderstorm lash Delhi-NCR; flights, trains delayed; traffic congestion in parts of national capital

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the hilly areas will also receive heavy snowfall in the next two days.

Water logging in parts of Delhi NCR following heavy downpour

After recording the warmest January since 2012, the national capital received light rainfall Monday evening, which was followed by very heavy rains early Tuesday. Water-logging and long traffic jams was reported from many areas in Delhi due to heavy downpour. Other than Delhi, heavy rainfall was also received in Ghaziabad and Noida regions, which also brought an improvement in the air quality of the national capital.

Darkness engulfed the national capital Tuesday morning as heavy rains continued to lash the region.

Heavy downpour on Tuesday led to a delay in many flights and trains in the national capital. Traffic congestion was also reported from many areas. 

Fifteen trains were delayed with an average delay of two to three hours. These include Howrah-New Delhi Poorva Express, Malda-Delhi Junction Farakka Express, Mumbai Amritsar Express and others. The Puri-New Delhi Purushottam Express was late by six hours, Northern Railways said. 

The minimum temperature was recorded at 11.5 degrees Celsius, four notches above the season's average while the maximum temperature was 22.6 degrees Celsius, a notch above the season's average.

States including Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand received heavy snowfall on Monday, which affected the weather in Delhi.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the hilly areas will receive heavy snowfall in the next two days.

The national capital will receive rainfall for the entire week, it said.

Meanwhile, the MeT Centre in Lucknow on Tuesday said rain and thunderstorms with gusty winds are very likely in next 3 hrs at some places over Hardoi, Bahraich, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur, Meerut, Hapur, Shamli,Baghpat, Muzaffarnagar, Gautam Buddh Nagar, Ghaziabad and adjoining areas.

The Safdarjung observatory, the recording of which is considered official for the city, recorded 1.2 mm rainfall between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm.

Palam recorded 2.8mm, Lodhi Road 0.8mm, Ridge area 0.6mm and Ayanagar 0.6mm rainfall respectively.

Humidity oscillated between 98 and 66 per cent.

The weatherman has forecast generally cloudy sky for Tuesday with the possibility of light to moderate rain/thundershowers and isolated hailstorm.

There will be gusty winds through the day with the maximum and minimum temperatures likely to be around 20 and 11 degrees Celsius respectively.

The maximum temperature in Delhi settled at 28.7 degrees Celsius on Monday, which was seven notches above the season's average.

The minimum temperature was recorded at seven degrees Celsius on Sunday.
