HYDERABAD: In the last four years, the number of missing kids traced, and lost properties recovered by the government railway police (GRP) across Telengana is identical, as per data released by the South Central Railway (SCR) on Tuesday.
Railway police have traced, on an average, 323 lost properties, mostly baggage, and 323 missing children. The numbers have shot up drastically when compared to the 2009-2014 period, when 18 cases of missing properties were solved, and 25 missing children traced.
Surge in crime rate in T, AP rly divisions

In the same period, criminal offences across Hyderabad and Secunderabad railway divisions have seen a rise of over 100%.

Sources said more offenders were coming under GRP’s lens because of the integrated security systems — CCTV cameras and RPF kiosks — at major stations such as Secunderabad, Hyderabad, Kacheguda and Nizamabad among others.
Stolen properties mostly included cell phones and gold ornaments such as chains and rings that were snatched at various stations. Around 65% of the 14,000 offenders arrested at various railway stations were involved in theft and robbery. Rest of the delinquents were involved in eve-teasing, molestation and various violations of the
Railways Act, 1989.
Since 2014, GRP personnel have recovered gold ornaments worth Rs 1.1 crore. “On an average, ornaments worth Rs 25 lakh were recovered per year since 2014. However, compared to the present scenario, the recovery rate of stolen ornaments was very low during 2009-13 when the railway police could recover ornaments worth only Rs 1 lakh. This means that the value of the recovered ornaments per year was as less as Rs 25,000,” said GRP sources.
When it comes to fines imposed on illegal touts in railway stations across the state, there has been a staggering 300% rise in the last four years. In a major crackdown on touts, the railways levied Rs 4 lakh fines per year as against only Rs 1 lakh between 2009 and 2013.
