NEW DELHI: Three people were charred to death and two others were severely injured after their vehicles — an Eeco Sport and a Maruti Omni — collided and caught fire on Wednesday evening on Anand Vihar flyover. While one person died on the spot, two men died during treatment at a hospital.
DCP (Shahdara) Meghna Yadav said that preliminary inquiry suggests that the driver of the Eeco Sport travelling towards Vivek Vihar lost control, rode across the divider and rammed into the Omni that was going towards Anand Vihar bus terminal.
The collision caused a short circuit in one of the vehicles.
The incident was reported at 6.15pm. Eyewitnesses said that the Eeco Sport was at a high speed at the time of the incident. It wobbled on the road, rode over the divider and crashed into the Omni carrying three people. The deceased have been identified as Garv Sehgal (30), a resident of Krishna Nagar who was in the Eeco Sport, and Shamshad(28), a resident of Mustafabad, and Abdul, both occupants of the Maruti Omni.
Imran (28), one of the occupants of the Omni who survived the crash, told police that they were labourers at a hardware factory. They were heading towards Anand Vihar ISBT to board a bus to their hometowns. The owner of the Omni is yet to be traced. Police suspect it to be a private cab that had offered them a lift. The driver is yet to be identified.
One of the injured has been identified as Akshay Jain(21), a resident of Sarita Vihar. He was in the Eeco Sport. Jain suffered burn injuries and was admitted to a private hospital nearby. He was later referred to Safdarjung hospital.
Police are yet to ascertain what led to the accident and whether the occupants of the Eeco Sport were drunk. There is no CCTV footage of the incident. The Eeco Sport belonged to Sehgal’s father, who owns a business near Krishna Nagar. Family members told police that he had gone to meet a few friends and had planned to return home in the evening.

Two occupants of the Eeco Sport were pulled out by passersby when they noticed flames in the engine. However, they failed to pull out the others and they got charred to death. Occupants of both vehicles had fallen unconscious after the crash.
Three fire engines were pressed into service to douse the flames before the bodies could be pulled out. The bodies will be handed over to the family members after autopsy on Thursday afternoon.
