Archdiocese to build 50 houses for Kodagu flood victims
BENGALURU: To support displaced flood victims in Kodagu, the Archdiocese of Bangalore on Thursday promised to build 50 houses for them.
Archbishop of Bangalore Rev Peter Machado said: “Our Diocese of Mysore has decided to donate 3.9 acres of land at Hattihole in Kodagu for the purpose. We will construct about 50 houses, each costing Rs 5 lakh-Rs 6 lakh, for the affected famililies cutting across religions.”
He said they are planning to mobilize Rs 30 lakh-Rs 40 lakh from a fundraiser concert being performed by singer Sonu Nigam.
The event will be held on January 27 at St Joseph’s Indian High School Grounds near Mallya Hospital. “We are planning to sell concert tickets through a booking website. The money raised will be used for rehabilitation of the victims,” said Machado.
He said thousands of families in Kodagu are still struggling due to the flood aftermath. “It’s our responsibility to help people who are displaced and homeless,” he said, adding: “It’s difficult to mobilize huge financial resources for construction of houses so we decided to organize a fundraiser concert with participation from the people of Bengaluru.” He said they are also working with BBMP to help the homeless in Bengaluru.
