NEW DELHI: On the outside, this was a happy family comprising a woman, her son, his wife and her father. But except for the daughter-in-law, the other three members had been living a dual life. The trio had the cops on their toes with back-to-back house burglaries in southeast Delhi areas like Amar Colony and East of Kailash etc.
However, the gang was busted after their modus operandi was analysed.
DCP Chinmoy Biswal said that the police had arrested the woman, Veena (52), her son Rahul (22) and his father-in-law, Vijay Kumar (42). Two friends of Rahul, Sirajuddin (23) and Kishan (22) were also nabbed.
“A 71-year-old jeweller, Vijay Jain, who was the receiver of the stolen property has also been arrested. He is a resident of B K Dutt Colony and ran a shop in the name of Mayur Jewellers in Daryaganj,” Biswal added.
The police have recovered 10 laptops, gold, silver and diamond jewellery, four LCD TVs, cameras and wristwatches etc. An autorickshaw and a Chevrolet Beat, which was used to ferry the booty, has also been seized.
The Beat belongs to a ganglord, who has been identified as Upender Mama. Police said he supervises at least five such gangs in Delhi. The cops are now looking for him.
Biswal said that Veena would take up the job of a nurse or a house help in south east Delhi colonies. However, instead of targeting her employers, she would gather information about the houses in the neighbourhood and convey it to her son.
Rahul and his two friends would then reccee the target houses in his father-in-law’s auto and strike late at night. If the loot was big, they asked Mama to send the car.
Biswal said that a special team of ACP Anant Mittal and SHO Anant Gunjan was formed that cracked the case. An auto and a Beat car were also found present around the scenes of crime, CCTV footage revealed.
Based on information received, cops arrested three of the suspects on Wednesday from a park in Astha Kunj. They led the cops to the rest of the gang. Tools and equipment used to break-in and enter the houses was also recovered from their house.
