Tracking Brevard's stars: Wakefield, Horschel soar in golf

Former Boston Red Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield is no stranger to the golf course.

Tracking Brevard's sports stars:

Tim Wakefield: The former Boston Red Sox pitcher and Brevard native showed recently he knows how to handle a golf club, sinking a hole-in-one at the Satellite Beach Lions Club's Tournament for Sight fundraiser at The Habitat Golf Course in Valkaria.  Wakefield was not only on the winning team, he also managed to ace the hole on the Par 3 contest. The tournament raised more than $7,000.

Billy Horschel: The South Brevard native played in this week's PGA Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in San Diego and finished eighth at 13-under par 275, eight shots behind winner Justin Rose. Horschel was tied for sixth after the first round with a 6-under-par 66 that included an eagle on No. 5. He shot rounds of 66, 68, 71 and 70. A week ago, he tied for 25th at the Tournament of Champions on Kapaula Plantation Course in Hawaii, shooting 2-under for the tournament.

Ashlyn Harris: The former Satellite High standout is one of four goalkeepers currently on the roster for the Americans, who were in France and Spain last week, falling to the French 3-1 but defeating Spain 1-0. Harris, listed second on the depth chart, hopes to make the final cut for the 2019 World Cup in June. Next up is a match against Japan in the SheBelieves Cup in Chester, Pa., on Feb. 27.  

Melbourne Beach native Caroline Marks, then 16, won her second consecutive Florida Pro title in January at Sebastian Inlet.

Caroline Marks: The Melbourne Beach native recently captured her third pro surfing title, going back-to-back in the season-opening Florida Pro at Sebastian Inlet. As a tour rookie last season, the 16-year-old was ranked seventh in the world. 

Nick Lindheim: The Satellite Beach resident was tied for 74th after the first round and climbed into a 36th-place tie by Saturday at 6-under par at the PGA Farmers Insurance Open. Lindheim, who regained his Tour card this past season, had opened with a 1-under 71 that included five bogeys, and closed out his weekend with a 73, settling for tie for a 43rd-place tie with a 5-under total.

Marco Dawson: The Suntree resident and former Senior British Open winner tied for 10th in the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai in Kona, Hawaii, last week, shooting minus-2 for the tournament on the Champions Tour. Next up is the Oasis Championship in Boca Raton, Feb. 8-10.

Jashaun Corbin: The freshman running back from Rockledge was on prime-time TV for the New Year's Eve Gator Bowl as his Texas A&M Aggies crushed North Carolina State 52-13. He carried four times for 41 yards (10.2 average) and returned three kicks for 82 yards (27.3 average).

Mike Coffey: The rookie PBA bowler from Eau Gallie High earned his first big paycheck on the tour, winning $1,500 after placing 24th at this week's PBA Lubbock Sports Open in Lubbock, Texas. During qualifying, he tied for 20th and qualified for the Round of 24 (the casher's round) in his second PBA event with 2,962 pins.  

Greg Young: The Viera PBA bowler, competing in his fourth event of the year, placed 58th with a 2,783 total and failed to advance to the Round of 24 this week in the PBA Lubbock Sports Open in Lubbock, Texas.
