Congress MP from Malda joins Trinamool

Mausam’s switchover is considered to be crucial for Congress and will surely give a shot in the arm for Trinamool Congress as Mausam had bagged 33% votes in 2014, while her nearest rival CPM had 27% vote share and Trinamool got only 17% votes.

WEST BENGAL: Congress MP representing Malda North for two terms — Mausam Benazir Noor, who also happens to be the nephew of former Union minister ABA Gani Khan Choudhury, joined Trinamool Congress, which was officially declared by Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee at the state secretariat Nabanna on Monday after a brief meeting.
Barely a month before the notification of the Lok Sabha poll dates, Mausam’s switchover is considered to be crucial for Congress and will surely give a shot in the arm for Trinamool Congress as Mausam had bagged 33% votes in 2014, while her nearest rival CPM had 27% vote share and Trinamool got only 17% votes.

Mausam, a lawyer in her late thirties, would be contesting from the Malda North seat as a Trinamool candidate, said the CM. Mausam had been entrusted to campaign to look after Trinamool Congress' prospects in the three adjoining districts other than Malda — North and South Dinajpur, Murshidabad, all having a sizeable minority population.
Mausam said that she wants to see Mamata banerjee as the Prime Minister of the country and for which she joined Trinamool. “The charisma of Mamata Banerjee was clear from the Brigade rally of January 19.”
Poll experts feel that Mausam’s switchover will help Trinamool to make a dent in the vote bank of Congress as these districts are known to have a strong Congress base. In Murshidabad district, out of the three MP seats two were won by Congress in 2014 and one is held by CPM. In North Dinajpur, CPM’s Muhammad Selim won from Raigunj seat, where Trinamool came third.
