NEW DELHI: Ensure no garbage is dumped or burnt near Shahdara drain, the Central Pollution Control Board recently told Delhi government.
The apex pollution body, which had last month issued a showcause notice to the irrigation and flood control department, has asked it to prepare a time-bound action plan to stop dumping and burning waste near the east Delhi drain.
“Submit a time-bound action plan for completion of activities… Submit monthly report on the progress of implementation of the plan.
Take further necessary steps to ensure disposal and burning of waste does not occur along the Shahdara drain,” the CPCB chairman, SPS Parihar, has written to the irrigation and flood department secretary.

CPCB, earlier, was informed that the department plans to repair the boundary wall where it was broken. An immediate step of providing bamboo barricading has been provided. “Provisions will be made for ‘watch and ward’ to stop disposal and burning of waste along the drain,” the department has informed the pollution control board.

The department also has a comprehensive strategy to station water tanker to immediately extinguish fire, if any, caused due to burning of waste, a proposal of creating landscaping along the drain, and treatment of drain water with wetland technology. East Delhi Municipal Corporation would also be requested to take action against those damaging the boundary wall or fencing along the drain or bridges.
Earlier, CPCB was informed the department has been working on fixing fencing on the bridges over the drain. It claimed to have provided land to municipal authorities to construct dhalaos, 36 of which have already been constructed, to dissuade residents from disposing waste into it.
“Special intensive drive was launched during winter to prevent disposal or burning of waste on the territory, and joint inspection with EDMC officials were carried out to sensitise residents to use dhalaos,” the department said.
