NEW DELHI: Days after TOI reported the menace of vehicles driving into in-coming traffic at the Sarita Vihar underpass, policemen have booked 88 people for the offence. A notice, warning commuters, about the road being a one-way passage has been put up at the entrance of the underpass in southeast Delhi. A majority of people, who were booked in the past three days, were riding two-wheelers.
Joint commissioner (traffic) Alok Kumar said that following the report in The Times of India, teams were deployed near the entrance to the underpass and commuters exiting from the wrong side were challaned.
While 31 drivers were booked on Monday, the numbers for Tuesday and Wednesday were 12 and 45, respectively.

Police officers said that most of the violators claimed that they drove on the wrong side to save time. The nearest U-turn is almost a kilometre ahead on the Kalindi Kunj road. Cops said they would discuss whether the civic authorities could explore the possibility of a new U-turn.
Interestingly, the majority of violators were found to be workers in the Okhla Industrial Area, who claimed that urgency to reach work on time forced them to violate traffic norms. Cops said they would continue conducting surprise checks at the underpass to ensure maximum compliance.
Sarita Vihar underpass, which was to be a gateway for IGI airport-bound vehicles coming from Noida, now primarily has Okhla-bound drivers coming from Sukhdev Vihar and New Friends Colony. These drivers often brave in-coming traffic to reach Okhla, instead of taking a U-turn on GD Birla Marg or the Kalindi Kunj road and then entering the underpass using the correct side.
Two years ago, Maheish Girri, the member of parliament for the area, took up the matter with the Union urban development ministry and a U-turn was constructed about 300 metres from the mouth of the underpass, but that did not encourage motorists to observe the traffic rules.
