At Birbhum wedding, a special guest
Mamata Banerjee at Krishanu’s wedding in Rampurhat on Wednesday
RAMPURHAT (BIRBHUM): For more than two decades, Mantu Das has been a domestic help at chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s Kalighat residence. Banerjee was then a firebrand opposition leader training her guns at the ruling CPM.
On Wednesday evening, Das had a special guest at his elder son Krishanu’s wedding reception at Birbhum’s Kusumba village. On an official tour of the district, the CM took time off to attend the wedding party, much to the delight of the Das family and their awestruck neighbours, who swarmed their home to catch a glimpse of Banerjee blessing the couple.
Not only was the CM accorded a grand welcome, the reception menu had been decided keeping her food preferences in mind.
Banerjee, however, spent just 10 minutes at the Das home. She congratulated the newlyweds and left the reception long before dinner was served.
Overwhelmed, Krishanu said he had never imagined she would attend the wedding. “We consider Didi a family member. She has known my father for a long time and has always kept in touch with us. My father knows her preferences and made sure the menu included everything she likes,” he said.
Krishanu’s in-laws, too, were excited. “We are very fortunate that our daughter was blessed by none other than the chief minister,” said a family member of the bride.
Krishanu has been to Banerjee’s Kalighat residence on several occasions. A former communications officer with the state information and cultural affairs ministry, he is now posted at the Suri district information and cultural affairs office.
For Banerjee, Kusumba is familiar as her maternal uncle lived there. She would often visit the village as a child and it was there that Mantu met her family. He was later taken to Kalighat by a member of Banerjee’s family.
