Rain, hailstorm hit Delhi-NCR; flight operations, traffic affected

After light rains early in the day, Delhi and the national capital region witnessed another spell of rain and hailstorm on Thursday evening. Rain and heavy hailstorm in many parts of Delhi, Noida and Gurugram also affected the traffic movement. 18 flights were diverted from Delhi airport between 6 pm and 7 pm on Thursday due to bad weather.

NEW DELHI: After light rains early in the day, Delhi and the national capital region witnessed another spell of rain and hailstorm on Thursday evening. Rain accompanied by heavy hailstorm in many parts of Delhi, Noida and Gurugram also affected the traffic movement.

Operations at the Delhi airport saw massive disruption on Thursday as total 38 flights were diverted to nearby cities between 6 pm and 8.45 pm and several were facing departure delays of more than two hours due to severe rain and hailstorm in the national capital, according to officials.


This came after Delhi recorded a significantly warm day on Wednesday with the maximum temperature recording 25.1 degrees Celsius – two notches above normal for this time of the season, while the minimum was 12 — three notches above normal.
The minimum temperature on Thursday settled at 15 degrees Celsius, six notches above the season's average and the maximum temperature was recorded at 19.1 degrees Celsius, four notches below the season's average.


Delhi recorded 3.2 mm rainfall till 5.30 pm. Humidity level oscillated between 100 and 89 per cent.
Palam recorded 3.2 mm rainfall, Lodhi Road 3.8mm, Ridge 3.4mm, Ayanagar 4mm, Gurugram 3mm, Jafarpur 9mm, Najafgarh 3mm and Sports Complex 2mm.

Traffic movement was slow on New Rohtak Road due to water-logging at Anand Parbat, Delhi traffic police alerted.

Commuters had to face difficulty on MB Road due to water-logging at Batra Hospital and Sangam Vihar police station.

The weatherman has forecast shallow to moderate fog on Friday morning and mainly clear skies.
The maximum and minimum temperatures will hover around 19 and 10 degrees Celsius respectively.
