ARARIA/PATNA: Vigilance sleuths on Thursday arrested Palasi circle officer (CO) Virendra Kumar Singh (58) while he was allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from one Satyanarayan Yadav (42) at his rented accommodation at Shivpuri Colony in Araria district on Thursday.
Vigilance sources said the vigilance team led by DSP Gopal Paswan arrested the CO soon after he took the bribe from Yadav, who had lodged a complaint against the officer with the Vigilance Investigation Bureau on January 18.

Sources said an additional amount of Rs 40,000, which was hidden below the mattress of Singh’s bed, was also recovered by the vigilance team. The CO failed to reveal the source of the seized money.
Vigilance sources said Yadav had constructed a single-storey house in ward number 3 at Dhaphi village under Palasi circle, but the CO served him a notice on January 4 on the ground that he had constructed the house illegally by encroaching upon the government land.
“The CO had directed Yadav to vacate his house and remove all the constructions he had made on the 1.5-kattha land. After Yadav brought the matter to the notice of Araria ADM, the CO was asked to conduct a fresh inquiry into the case,” sources said, adding the CO directed one of his juniors to measure the land again.
“The inquiry report gave a clean chit to Yadav. After the submission of the report, Yadav went to meet the CO at his office. However, the CO demanded Rs 1 lakh from him as bribe to change his previous order,” sources said, adding Yadav later lodged a complaint with the VIB.
The arrested CO is a resident of Balwa Kunwari village under the Sadar police station area in Hajipur.
