Open schooling board receives 900 applications; Latur div tops the list
Pune: The Maharashtra State Board of Open Schooling has received about 900 admission applications. The registration process closes on February 15.
Subhash Rathod, the state coordinator for the board, said 700 offline and 200 online applications were submitted. He said the highest number of applications were from the Latur division.
“The initial date was set for January 31, but now we have extended the last date of registration to February 15.
We had expected a low response of about 500 students, as this is the first year. But we have already received up to 900 applications,” he said.
Rathod attributed the high numbers in the Latur division to the sustained advertisements by the board and also the fact that the division covers the Marathwada region. “Most people in the area drop out of school to get into vocations such as driving. Now the RTO has made Standard X completion compulsory for getting a driver’s licence. There is a fear among people that soon, all such jobs would need a Standard X certificate as minimum eligibility. I think that is also a reason behind the spurt,” he said.
Meanwhile, non-governmental organisations (NGO) have raised issues regarding the compulsory submission of Aadhaar numbers.
“Aadhaar has been made compulsory because sometimes, students lose their certificates. With the Aadhaar number, we can easily search for their online certificates and re-issue them. We got calls from NGOs saying that because of this compulsion, some students were unable to get admissions. Therefore, we have decided to start Aadhaar camps in centres wherever required,” he said.
