Share of users in Armenia attacked by crypto-miners increased, Kaspersky Lab says

YEREVAN, February 14. /ARKA/. The share of users in Armenia attacked by crypto mining malware  in 2018 increased, the Armenian representative of the Kaspersky Lab said. According to it,  13% of  users’ devices  in Armenia  recorded secret attempts of crypto mining malware  installment, up from 9.3% in 2017.

In the neighboring Georgia, the share of users subjected to such attacks in 2017 was 6.73%, growing to 9%  in 2018 to 9%, while in Azerbaijan these figures were 5.28% and 7%, respectively.

In 2018, the Kaspersky Lab recorded attempts to install crypto mining malware on computers of 5,638,828 unique users. In the total volume of attacks, the share of such malware  was 8.50%.

Experts say when crypto mining malware secretly installed on a device, it responds more slowly to user actions, because its  memory, the processor and the video card are busy with crypto-mining.

"To prevent the installation of crypto mining malware, users should follow the security rules of using the device, the Internet, social networks, email and instant messengers, and always have a reliable antivirus on their device," the company noted.

ESET experts found a clipper application on Google Play that replaces the data in the clipboard. The malicious program was disguised as MetaMask, a service for storing and managing crypto currency.
The purpose of the attackers was to steal data necessary to gain access to the crypto cell of users. Thus, the clipper application replaced the addresses of Bitcoin and Ethereum users' wallets with the addresses of fraudsters. --0--
