LOCAL SPORTS

In Basketball, Saint Mary’s dealt St. FX a pair of losses in Halifax Saturday night. The X-Women made it a very close game, as the Huskies squeaked by with a 74-72 victory. The X-Men fell 96-87. Both teams wrap up the regular season at Cape Breton University on Friday.


In Membertou, the Junior Miners dealt a 3-1 loss to the Strait Pirates. Tonight, the Pirates host Eskasoni at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre, while the Bulldogs are at the Antigonish Arena to face off against the Cumberland County Blues. Both games begin at 7:30.


In the MHL, the Crushers defeated the Yarmouth Mariners 4-3.


The Weeks Major Midgets lost a close 3-2 match against Steele Subaru in Dartmouth. Meanwhile, the Cape Breton West Islanders fell 6-1 to Cole Harbour in Port Hood. Those two teams meet again in Port Hood at Noon, while Steele Subaru hosts the Weeks team again at 1:15.


In Major Bantam, the Wearwell Bombers outscored the Storm 6-4 at the Wellness Centre. The Novas were shutout 1-0 in Halifax by ACCEL Physio. Today, it’s the Novas turn to face the Storm at 11am in Cole Harbour, while the Bombers travel to the Brooklyn Arena to face Kings Mutual at 2:20.


The Cabot Highlanders were edged out 3-2 by the Kings in Port Hawkesbury. The teams meet again in Port Hawkesbury at 12:30.


In the NS Female Midget AAA League, the Northern Subway Selects shut out the Rockets 5-0 in exhibition play at the Pictou County Wellness Centre. The Selects play the Station Six Fire in their final game of the regular season at Noon today at the Wellness Centre.


In Rural League Playoffs at the Antigonish Arena, Heatherton took the first game of their series, defeating Pleasantdale 4-1. In the first game of the other series, St. Croix outscored the Outlaws 2-1.


In the 18U Womens Northumberland Volleyball Prep League, the Antigonish Storm travel to Brookfield to play the Rapids in one of two games scheduled. The other game will see the Truro Lynx travel to New Glasgow to play Pictou Invasion.


NATIONAL SPORTS

The Flames were unable to keep pace with the Oilers tonight in a fight for playoff seeding. Calgary got pummelled 8-4 at home by the Chicago Blackhawks to fall two points behind Edmonton in the standings. Earlier, Adam Larsson scored his first goal in 360 days as the Oilers beat the host Florida Panthers 4-1. Edmonton sits second in the Pacific Division while Calgary is the first wild-card spot.


Auston Matthews scored in his second straight game as the Maple Leafs beat the Senators 4-2 in Ottawa. The Toronto forward is up to a career-high 42 goals on the season. And the Canadiens let one slip away at home. Tyler Seguin’s goal at 2:52 of overtime capped the Stars’ comeback from a three-goal deficit in a 4-3 victory at Montreal.


The Tampa Bay Lightning keep on pulling out victories, this time 5-3 over the Philadelphia Flyers for their 10th in a row. The Lightning are the third team in N-H-L history to reel off two separate winning streaks of at least 10 games in the same season.


Miami’s Derrick Jones Junior finally got his long-awaited dunk contest title on All-Star Saturday Night. Jones and Orlando’s Aaron Gordon needed a dunk-off to decide a winner, with Jones prevailing 48-47 for the trophy. Meanwhile, Miami’s Bam Adebayo won the skills title, and Sacramento’s Buddy Hield took the 3-point crown.


The N-B-A has renamed its All-Star Game M-V-P award in honour of the late Kobe Bryant. Commissioner Adam Silver announced the move ahead of the All-Stars skills challenge in Chicago. Bryant became the youngest player to ever play in an All-Star Game when he made his debut in 1998 at age 19. He won the M-V-P award a record-tying four times in his 18 appearances.


In Week 2 of the XFL, the Seattle Dragons defeated the Tampa Bay Vipers 17-9, while the New York Guardians were crushed 27-0 by the DC Defenders. Today, it’s the Dallas Rengades vs the L.A. Wildcats, while in the other match the Houston Roughnecks host the St. Louis Battlehawks.


The coronavirus outbreak in China is raising concerns about a potential shortage of the hockey sticks used by the world’s top players. Stick manufacturers Bauer and C-C-M have factories in China that have closed. Officials with both companies say they are monitoring the situation. Another major stick supplier is Warrior which has not been affected because its production is based in Tijuana, Mexico.
