Nellore railway station, which has been selected under the ‘Redevelopment of Railway Stations’, will be provided with world class amenities. The project will be taken up jointly by the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) and National Buildings Construction Company Limited (NBCCL) with ₹100 crore.
The idea of the project is to upgrade the station keeping in view the expected additional inflow of passengers in the next five years.
The station will be integrated with additional infrastructure and provided world class facilities by utilising the commercial potential of the railway station.
The station will be made energy efficient and eco-friendly by implementing various green and energy initiatives such as cellular rain water harvesting, green terraces, LED lighting, solar panels, energy efficiency devices and use of insulation on rooftop, high capacity motors and capacitors at load centres. At present, Nellore railway station is non-suburban grade-3 (A-Category) station and is located on the busiest Vijayawada-Chennai route.
The station handles 43 pairs of express and seven pairs of passenger trains every day. The average footfall per day is 25,000 and the station was provided with four platforms, a foot over bridge, three escalators, three lifts, food plaza, retiring rooms and both upper class and general waiting halls.
Tourist destination
Nellore district is a known tourist destination with SHAR, Pulicat Lake, Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary, Udayagiri and Venkatagiri Forts and some ancient temples.
Under the project, Nellore station will be provided iconic architecture, shopping, sufficient parking, food court, internet centres, CCTVs, exhibition gallery, separate facilities for divyangan and other amenities, according to the railway officials.
