It hasn't even opened yet, is already booked for 2019 and bookings are being taken for 2020.

It's safe to say there is a buzz around Giraffe Shed - a unique wedding venue in Tregynon, near Welshpool in Powys.

It's the brainchild of Hannah and Neil Evans who both grew up nearby.

When they returned to mid-Wales after a spell living in Cardiff, they came up with the idea of transforming the shed on Neil's family farm into wedding venue.

They describe themselves as being "a bona-fide, one-of-a-kind, straight-up anomaly" with a venue "Nanna won’t approve of".

"Traditional weddings ain’t our bag," their website proclaims.

The Giraffe Shed opened early due to demand after the owners started posting on social media

Neil is a third generation farmer and Hannah, 37, was able to move her wedding photography business, but not long after they had resettled did the idea for a wedding venue begin.

That thought quickly turned into action - with Neil, 40, turning his hand into doing the bulk of the work on building the shed.

The couple have been working on their plans for about 12 months, when Hannah made a passing comment that she wished they had their own wedding venue.

"We chatted to Neil's parents, and everybody was on board," she said.

The name and design came from a shed that had previously sat on the plot.

"There was a shed there originally, years ago. Neil's granddad called it the giraffe shed, and nobody knows why. We think it had something to do with the windows," said Hannah.

They've documented every stage of the creation of the new building - a heptagon-shaped concrete barn.

Hannah designed the shed to maximise the light

Hannah is an award-winning wedding photographer and her background in the industry was instrumental in how the building was designed and ensuring the light enhanced the venue.

The inspiration came from festival-style weddings Hannah had worked at.

Hannah said it was the festival weddings that she enjoyed shooting the most and says she has taken inspiration from them.

"Shooting up to 40 weddings a year, and seeing different venues, was quite good at seeing how people did it wrong and did it right," said Hannah.

When asked how she would sum up the feel she's creating, Hannah said: "Alternative, relaxed, badass, festival, unwedding, and non traditional."

Hannah and Neil's wedding venue is licensed for 100 guests for the ceremony and 120 for the evening and they hope to work with street food traders.

Hannah said: "We want our brides and grooms to really get what we are about. We want them to come in and put their own stamp on it, but understand it's a farm at the end of the day."

She added: "We weren't planning on doing any [weddings] this year. But we were absolutely inundated with inquiries when our social media went live".

When they started the build - with local builders helping Neil and his Dad with the works - they started posting progress on social media and interest "blew up."

Straight away they were fielding inquiries from couples wanting to use the venue, despite it still being a shell.

The first couple that will use the Giraffe Shed for their wedding are coming from California.

How much does it cost?

Couples getting married at the Giraffe Shed get the venue for the whole weekend with it costing £3,000 for the three days. While this means it will limit the number of times they will host guests, it means they will be able to focus on each ceremony.

This year the Giraffe Shed is only hosting eight weddings and will look to go up to 15 for 2020. Hannah and Neil are also looking to create shepherd hut accommodation for 16 guests next year while others are free to camp on the neighboring field.

The plans include a toilet and shower block.

"However there is plenty of great accommodation around," said Hannah.

Hannah hopes the venue will help entice people from around the country - and further afield - to mid Wales, which will then also help local businesses.
