PATNA: Chief minister (CM) Nitish Kumar on Sunday gifted 49 schemes worth Rs 664 crore to Purnia region besides inaugurating the new building of Purnia Engineering College at a function organised by the building construction department (BCD) on the college premises at the divisional headquarters.
The CM also inaugurated a regional centre of the Bihar Madrassa Education Board. The regional centre will cater to the needs of people from Purnia, Kosi and Bhagalpur regions.
Speaking on the occasion, the CM said Purnia, where roads, health facilities and educational institutions were in a very bad shape earlier, has changed for the better.

“Today only, PM Narendra Modi laid foundation stones for a medical college at Purnia through remote control from Begusarai. Few months back, a new university was set up at Purnia. The Purnia Engineering College will now run from its own premises as its new building was inaugurated today,” Nitish said, adding his government has already taken a policy decision to open at least one engineering college in each district of Bihar.
“Once the facility of an engineering college is available in each district, the youth of Bihar will not require to go to other states for studying engineering,” Nitish said. He also asserted that his government was working for development of all sectors under its ‘saat nischay’ (seven resolves) programme.
The CM also laid foundation stones for a scheme to provide safe drinking water in altogether 449 wards in Purnia region.

Speaking about the recently-announced Chief Minister Old Age Pension Scheme, Nitish said the new scheme would be implemented across the state from August 1. He said the scheme would be effective from April 1, 2018. All people above the age of 60 years, except those getting service pension from the government, will be eligible to get pension under the new scheme,” he added.
Science and technology minister Jai Kumar Singh, education minister Krishna Nandan Prasad Verma and Purnia MP Santosh Kushwaha also attended the function.
