Jumbo strays into Purulia village, mob pelts stones
Purulia: Over 5,000 people pelted stones for about two hours on Sunday morning at an elephant that had strayed into a village near Bandowan block town.
A huge police force was rushed in to disperse the mob to rescue the elephant.
The elephant was first spotted around 11.30pm on Saturday after a villager was injured. Forest officials arrived after it stopped at Jaradungri, 2km from Bandowan block town.
Around 9.30am the next day, villagers began pelting bricks at it. An altercation followed with the officials after the residents said no elepha-nt had ever entered their vill-ages. It was only after 11.30am that police could bring the situation under control.
DFO Asitabh Chatterjee said they were probing whether this was one of two elephants that had been rescued from Howrah and released in Jharkhand. Efforts are on to send it back to the jungle.
After being rescued and tranquillised for over 32 hours, the two elephants were brought from Howrah’s Jagatballabpur and released at Bandowan’s Mayur Jharna elephant reserve. While one was sent to Jharkhand’s Jorsha on February 14, the other was sent the next day.
