New Delhi: Madhya Pradesh chief minister Kamal Nath will kick off implementation of the announced farm loan waiver scheme in the state in Ratlam on February 22, and the state aims to waive loans of 2.55 million farmers totalling 10,128 crore by March 1, said people aware of the matter.

The state government has earmarked nearly Rs 40 crore for organising events across the state to hand over loan waiver certificates to the beneficiaries or deliver the certificates to their homes. The state budget to be presented on Wednesday is expected to make provision for this exercise.

A mega event is likely to be organised on February 22 since the CM is expected to make the loan waiver the centrepiece of his party's Lok Sabha campaign in the state.

Ratlam has been chosen because it is an old Congress stronghold which the party has been winning since 1984, losing it only in 2014 and that too before winning it back in a bypoll the next year. It is among the only three Lok Sabha seats out of 29 that the Congress holds in Madhya Pradesh, apart from Nath's Chhindwara and Jyotiraditya Scindia's Guna.

Under the farm loan waiver scheme, money will be deposited directly in the bank loan accounts of farmers through electronic transfer. From February 25 till March 1, the government will organise 'Kisan Sammelans' in all 383 rural tehsils of the state to hand over loan waiver certificates to the beneficiary farmers.
