A 15th century house has been named Wales' best wedding venue at an industry awards event.

The Welsh Wedding Awards 2019, took place in Cardiff's Exchange Hotel, and more than 250 wedding specialists travelled from all over the country to celebrate the industry.

And coming away the coveted best venue gong was Pencoed House Estate, in Cardiff .

The venue, which according to legend was once residence of King Arthur, was chosen after a public vote.

Jamie Williams, who runs the business with his wife Johanna, said: "We're absolutely delighted for the whole team.

"We've only got nine full time employees. It was a fantastic experience for [the team].

"They've all worked so hard from the first wedding to now.

Jamie, who lives in Penarth, explained that the business was never meant to be a full-time thing, just a hobby that his parents were taking up.

At first they were planning on doing around five events a year. They now do closer to 150.

The 45-year-old said: "It's just grown through word of mouth.

"We're so fortunate because there are so many great venues in our region and overall. And we won our region and won best overall.

"It's a real feather in our cap, especially as it's only our eighth wedding season.

He added: "We took my mother [to the awards] who's 73, she's the founder of the business with my father who's passed away now.

"It was my mum and dad's house and my mum had this idea that she wanted to do weddings as a sort of hobby in 2011.

"And my mum asked me to help out with the licencing and I've been there ever since.

"My mum cried when we went up on the stage. When they announced we'd won overall, she cried and good for her; my father passed away 15 months ago. We've got a housekeeper there but my mum is one of the first to jump on the mop if they've missed something.

"It was really special for my mum."
