The film, which Washington will direct, will be written by "Mudbound" screenwriter Virgil Williams. It's based on the true story of Canedy’s love affair with 1st Sgt. Charles Monroe King, who was killed in 2006 in Iraq when his son, Jordan, was just 7 months old. But King left behind a journal in which he wrote important life lessons for their newborn son, with "his spirit living on in his messages of love to Dana and Jordan."

In addition to starring in the film, Jordan will also produce the project through his Outlier Society production company.

This is the latest project for Jordan, who came off of a busy 2018. Looking ahead, he'll also star in the courtroom drama "Just Mercy" and the action thriller "Without Remorse," based on the Tom Clancy novel.
