The staggering amount made landfall on Thursday and caused the city to declare a state of emergency. It beat Flagstaff's previous 1915 record by almost five inches.
But the massive snowfall fell just two inches short of becoming Arizona's snowiest single day, a record that was established in 1968 and that stands at 38inches, CNN reports.

The storm started on Wednesday in the northern Sierra Nevada before making its way to the southwestern states, according to Accuweather.
Flagstaff's airport recorded a whopping 40.3 inches in their immediate vicinity. Annually, the city gets on average 102 inches of snow. Last year, it had just 42 inches of snow.

Winter Storm Quiana is currently making its way to the Plains and Upper Midwest, bringing snow and freezing rain, The Weather Channel reports.
The storm started in the Southwest and saw Las Vegas with considerable snowfall for the first time in 10 years with just .8 inches of snow.
By early Saturday morning, the Twin Cities and northern Wisconsin saw some light snow and freezing rain.
The area around eastern Colorado, northern New Mexico, western Kansas and western Nebraska is seeing heavier snow.
