BENGALURU: Cybercrime police detained man from Shahapur, Yadgir district on Friday on charges of posting abusive and threatening messages on home minister MB Patil’s Facebook wall.
Officials from Patil’s office had approached cybercrime sleuths from the Criminal Investigation Department last week, saying that a man identifying himself as Kishore had posted abusive messages and had threatened Patil with dire consequences.
Swinging into action, CID sleuths found that the messages were posted from a mobile phone and using the Facebook account, Kishor.karijola.
A special team was formed comprising cybercrime police from the districts of Belagavi, Raichur and Kalaburagi to trace the miscreant. The team at first had little success as the device remained switched off. The only lead the cops had was that the miscreant had used the mobile phone in a remote village of Yadgir district.
The team began collecting call records of the device. “We found that no calls were made or received by the number in last couple of months. However, the Facebook account was created a week before the abusive messages were sent,” police sources said.
Meanwhile, the miscreant used the device for a short period earlier this week before turning it off. “But that was enough for us to track the device,” the source said.
“On Friday morning, we knocked on the doors of the suspect, who lives in Shahapur. During interrogation, he confessed saying that the mobile phone belonged to him but he wasn’t using it for many months. He’s in his late 30s and the Facebook account from which the messages were sent is a fake.”
