NEW DELHI: State
government passes order converting 14 out of total 41 constituent arts and science colleges under director of
college education (
DCE) into government colleges.
The order has come on Friday, nine months after chief minister
Edappadi K Palaniswami announced in the assembly that all 41 college will be converted to government colleges.
The government has decided to convert these colleges in phased manner considering huge financial burden.
Earlier it was estimated that government will have to spend Rs 152 Crore every year towards these colleges. But a detailed account on total number of staffs took the total spending up to over Rs 168 Crores.
Converting these colleges at one stretch will cause a huge financial burden on the state government, it has now been decided to convert these colleges in phased manner, said in the government order.
While the conversion will take place in three phases, it has been decided to convert 14 colleges in the first phase.
Bharathidasan university (BDU) which runs 10 constituent colleges also largest among other state-run universities will have 4 of its colleges to be converted in the first phase.
Constituent colleges in Lalgudi in Trichy, apart one each in Perambalur, Thanjavur, and Pudukottai districts to be converted.
The decision to convert these was taken after consistent demand from state-run universities under director of collegiate education as they were unable to run the colleges over huge financial burden.
