Reliance Infrastructure Limited (RInfra), a part of Anil-Ambani-lead Reliance Group, has received the Letter of Award (LOA) from the Airport Authority of India (AAI) for construction of a  new greenfield Airport at Hirasar in Rajkot district of Gujarat.

The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract is worth Rs 648 crore, the company said on Tuesday.

The airport has to be completed within 30 months from the date of issue of letter of award (LoA). The scope of work under the contract includes detailed designing, engineering, procurement and construction of runway, basic strips, turning pads, taxiways, apron, perimeter and other roads, and the remaining airport infrastructure.

“The Hirasar airport project will further strengthens Reliance Infrastructure Ltd’s bona fide to be a leader in infrastructure projects,” Arun Gupta, Reliance Infrastructure E&C CEO, said.

As BusinessLine reported earlier last year, Rinfra has emerged as the lowest bidder for the project in August 2018 after getting the highest technical score of 92.2 per cent among nine qualified bidders that included EPC majors such as Larsen & Toubro, Afcons, Dilip Buildcon and Gayatri Projects, among others.

The greenfield airport at Hirasar will be located about 28 km from Rajkot, is to be built at a cost of over Rs 1,400 crore. The Centre cleared the construction of the airport next to National Highway (NH-8B) connecting Ahmedabad and Rajkot, nearly 36 km from the existing Rajkot airport, in October 2017. It is planned as a single runway airport for the operation of ‘C’ category aircraft.

The proposed project aims at supporting the development of trade and tourism, besides improving regional connectivity in Gujarat. RInfra noted the holistic development of Hirasar airport will not only serve the demand generated by Rajkot city but also cater to the demand in the neighbouring states.
