NEW DELHI: Gangster Keshav Kakkar, who is in judicial custody, has allegedly been running an extortion racket out of Rohini Jail. Last week, a Karol Bagh-based businessman approached the police and four of Kakkar’s men were arrested on Monday.
Cops have found that following Kakkar’s calls to city businessmen demanding protection money, his men would visit the target’s office or home and open fire to threaten him.
The location of the mobile phone tower used to make the calls has been confirmed to be near Rohini Jail. Cops will now seek custody of Kakkar from court to interrogate him.
The incident comes to light shortly after jailed gangster Rahul Kala was found to be making extortion video calls from Tihar Jail. Delhi Police is going to take up the matter with Tihar officials soon.
The arrested men have been identified as Tarun Chikna (22) from Karol Bagh, Bakhtawar (26) from Tank Road, Vicky (18) from Nihal Vihar and Dalip (44) from Patel Nagar.
“The breakthrough was made by a joint police team of ACP Naresh Kumar and inspectors Lalit Kumar and Dheeraj Singh. They were threatening the businessman from Tank Road on the directions of Kakkar,” DCP (central) Mandeep Randhawa said. A countrymade pistol with two live cartridges have been found on them.
The victim runs a business of property and finance, said the police. On February 23, he received a call on his mobile phone allegedly from Kakkar, who abused and threatened to eliminate him and his family and hung up.

The next day, when the businessman was sitting in his office with his partners, two men came around 8pm and threatened him. One of them whipped out a pistol and tried to fire at him. But as people gathered, the men fled after warning him that they would return. The victim immediately went to the police and an FIR was filed for criminal intimidation and attempted murder.
The police collected the CCTV footage and carried out a technical analysis of the phone number. “The location of the tower was found to be Aggarwal Mall near Rohini Jail, which corroborated with the complaint’s allegations that the call was made by Keshav Kakkar,” Randhawa said.
On Monday, cops managed to nab Vicky, who led cops to the three others. Vicky said he had been handling the operations after taking instructions from Kakkar over the phone. Dalip, who used to supply the weapons, had got the pistol and nine live cartridges for the latest case.
