Casteist slur: Woman raped at knifepoint in Ariyalur dt

She, however, lodged a complaint with the Ariyalur all-women police station and a case has been registered.

Chennai: A woman was raped and accosted with a knife by a man after he hurled casteist slurs at her in Ariyalur district.

Rani*, 26, was on her way to a ration shop to buy groceries for her family on February 27 when Muthu intercepted her and began arguing with her. Sources say that Rani had gone to submit the required form for groceries under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) scheme, under which eligible families can purchase 35 kg of rice at Rs 2 per kilo.

Muthu, who is from a dominant upper caste community, began hurling casteist abuses after which he assaulted and raped her, police sources said. Rani belongs to a scheduled caste. She, however, lodged a complaint with the Ariyalur all-women police station and a case has been registered.

"I've known Muthu for the past three years. He works with a tractor. My mother-in-law and I have gone to his house to work and that is all I know of him. After that, he used to look at me in the wrong way and show gestures regularly which I used to ignore. On Wednesday, when I was coming back from the ration shop, he intercepted me and forced me to go with him. When I refused and moved forward, he grabbed me from behind by my hair," Rani wrote in the FIR. "He held a knife close to my neck, raped me for an hour and escaped from the spot. I somehow struggled to get up and then went home and narrated the incident to my mother-in-law." As Rani's husband was out of town, she took her father-in-law and rushed to the police station and filed a complaint.
