NEW DELHI: An already congested Bipin Chandra Pal Marg that runs through Chittaranjan Park with the two main markets located on it has become a pedestrian hazard ever since Delhi Metro’s Magenta Line chugged into the area.

There has been an increase in the traffic volume with the addition of e-rickshaws that provide last-mile connectivity to the metro station. Add to that encroachments and illegal parking along the stretch and you have quite a nightmare.

The road connects Gurudwara Road in GK to Alaknanda DDA apartments, which further connects to the Anandamayee Marg that leads to Sarita Vihar underpass connecting Noida and Faridabad. The stretch has turned extremely busy after the Sarita Vihar underpass was inaugurated. Instead of using Ring Road and Maa Anandamayee Marg towards the underpass, vehicles coming from Malviya Nagar and Chirag Dilli take Bipin Chandra Pal Marg as a short-cut. As a result, the 50-foot wide road that was designed to accommodate vehicles from the colonies has become a public thoroughfare.
PK Pal of EBDP Association, an umbrella body for residents of CR Park, said they have been requesting the police and road-owning agencies to look for an alternative to prevent the traffic mess. “Traffic management has almost failed as traffic authorities have not been able to provide road safety measures, particularly on Bipin Chandra Pal Road. In August 2016, we had written to the DCP about this,” he said.
The traffic police has installed signals, but lack of enforcement means the rules are violated often.

The first crossing near the A-block, has at least four banks that cater to almost 2,000 customers. “Since there are no parking spaces available near these banks, visitors leave their cars parked on the road that choke the stretch till Gurudwara Road in GK, often leading to a bottleneck during peak hours that blocks the other carriageway as well,” said Pal.
Even though a traffic signal is installed for vehicles going right towards Ring Road, few follow it.
Near market number 1, a non-functional traffic signal adds to the chaos created by the rampant on-road parking. Goods vehicles and visitors to the market leave their vehicles on the road. Near market number 2, which is about 500 metres away, the problems similar. Thursday’s accident occurred here. Last December, a 78-year-old man had been hit by an autoricksaw here.
