LUCKNOW: Will Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav contest the 2019 Lok Sabha polls from Azamgarh – the parliamentary constituency of his father Mulayam Singh Yadav?
Speculations over the issue gained momentum on Friday after SP patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav was named as the party candidate from Mainpuri parliamentary constituency. Presently, Mulayam represents Azamgarh in Lok Sabha.
What further fuelled the speculation over Akhilesh contesting from Azamgarh was the announcement that Dimple Yadav will contest the 2019 polls from Kannauj.
Earlier Akhilesh had drop broad hints that he may contest from Kannauj and ask Dimple to stay away from electoral politics to counter allegations of dynasty politics against the Yadav clan.
Akhilesh’s recent tours to Kannauj to attend Twitter Chaupal organised in his name and then his visit to Pulwama martyr Pradeep’s house in the district a day after the terror attack only added weight to reports that he was keen to step into the fray from Kannauj. Now that the party has announced Dimple Yadav’s name, Akhilesh will have to contest from another seat.
“It is true that initially Akhilesh Yadav had planned to contest the Lok Sabha polls from Kannauj, but Azamgarh is equally likely because his father and party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav is the sitting MP from the seat and the party enjoys considerable support there. Azamgarh is a Muslim- Dalit dominated seat, which is a winning combination in the light of the SPBSP alliance,” said a senior SP leader.
According to senior SP leaders, it is not only about Azamgarh but Akhilesh’s candidature from the seat will leave an impact on the adjoining seats as well and further strengthen the position of the alliance in east UP. However, senior leaders did not rule out the possibility of Akhilesh nominating any of his trusted lieutenants for Azamgarh to enter the fray from another seat which may be strategically more important.
