When a baby monkey was under attack by a pack of dogs this loving dog came to her rescue - now he clings to his surrogate mother's back and even breastfeeds.

The orphaned monkey was under attack by a pack of dogs in central India when she was saved by Ruby, a kind-hearted one-eyed dog.

Ruby, who does not have any puppies of her own, now wanders through Kanskheda village in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh with the monkey safely perched on her back.

And whenever her new baby leaves her back the dog keeps her one eye on the monkey and is 'very protective', according to the dog's owner Suresh Prabhy.

As villagers feed the dog and monkey duo the baby is forced to cling to her surrogate mother's back.

Suresh Prabhy, the dogs owner, said: 'The baby monkey was roaming along in the area when a pack of dogs surrounded him.

'Before they could rip him apart, my dog Ruby intervened and saved his life.

'It has beeen more than one and a half months since the pair became the centre of attention in the entire village.

'The bitch which does not have any pup considers the monkey as he own child and is very protective of him.'

The duo are the talk of the town in Seoni Malwa of Hoshangabad district as nearby villages have started visiting the house to get a glimpse of the unlikely family.
