NEW DELHI: While trailing a suspect in the murder of an employee of a private firm, Crime Branch stumbled upon a syndicate of gunrunners supplying weapons to the gangs of east and northeast Delhi. The country-made pistols sold by this gang were also being used in street crimes in these areas.
Additional CP (crime) Rajiv Ranjan said on Tuesday that two members of the gang were arrested and seven pistols and over a dozen cartridges have been seized.

One of the arrested men, Mahesh, had allegedly committed a murder on October 30 last year and had been on the run. His associate has been identified Suresh. The gang procured these pistols from Uttar Pradesh for Rs 5,000-7000 and sold them to customers for Rs 10,000-15,000. A bullet was being sold for around Rs 600 per piece.
Crime Branch had been analysing the robbery cases committed in the recent months and found that illegal firearms were being smuggled to NCR after procuring them from Budaun district of UP. The team was also investigating a murder case of a man named Sanjay that had taken place in October last year in Seemapuri and found that an absconding accused in that case is also a weapon supplier.
“A team led by ACP Sandeep Lamba and inspector Pankaj Arora was assigned to track down these suppliers. They found Mahesh’s group and mounted surveillance on members. The team received information that two of the criminals of this gang would be coming near Anand Vihar bus terminal to deliver the consignment of weapons to the conduit of a local gangster,” DCP (crime) Rajesh Deo said.
Accordingly, a trap was laid and the accused were identified by the informer. They tried to flee but were overpowered. The arms and ammunition recovered from them were seized and an FIR under Arms Act was registered. The cops also seized a stolen motorcycle. They had stolen the bike from Rithala metro station and used it to deliver weapons.
The accused, Suresh, has eight criminal cases including that of murder and Arms Act registered against him. He has been supplying weapons for two years. Mahesh said he had been in the trade for around a year and had never been arrested in the past. He and four of his associates killed their rival, Sanjay, and went underground. The cops are looking for the weapon maker based in Badaun.
