Shanann Watts' mother said she instinctively knew her daughter had died when she was murdered on August 13 because her 'spirit' came to her.

Sandra Rzucek made the revelation during a lengthy interview with Dr. Phil last week. She said she sat up in her bed the moment Shanann was strangled by her husband Chris Watts in their home in Colorado at around 5am.

'I felt my daughter's spirit the moment she died. I knew. I swear to God I knew. ... I woke up the whole house. I said, 'Something's wrong with Shanann,"' Sandra said in her interview on Monday.

For the next several weeks, the family made frantic appeals for information about Shanann and the girls' whereabouts.

Chris Watts strangled his pregnant wife Shanann then smothered their daughters Bella, four, and Celeste, three, after having an argument with his wife about his affair

Chris gave television interviews where he claimed they had simply gone missing after going out one day to visit a friend.

Instead, he had strangled Shanann after an argument over his infidelity and then smothered daughters Celeste, three, and Bella, four.

He took their bodies to a crude oil field where he worked, buried Shanann - who was 15 weeks pregnant at the time with a baby boy - and dumped the girls' bodies in oil containers.

The Rzucek family said in their interview that they did not believe he had harmed them until he made a harrowing confession which went into painstaking detail about how he murdered each of them.

The night police found their bodies, Shanann said she had another spiritual connection with her daughter.

'That night I was laying in bed and I just felt a presence and I heard my daughter. I felt her, and I heard her say, "I love you mommy and I'm sorry."

Watts pleaded guilty to the murders last year as part of a plea deal which saw him avoid the death penalty.

He will spend the rest of his life behind bars.

The Rzucek family agreed to the deal and said they did not believe in the death penalty.

In their interview with Dr. Phil, Sandra credited her strength in the face of such momentous grief to her religion and said that if she didn't have God, she does not know if she would still be standing.
