NEW DELHI: A teenager was killed while two others are battling for their lives after a group of schoolchildren, out on a joyride in a WagonR car, drove off a bridge and hit a tree near Rohini on Monday. The youth at the steering wheel was in an inebriated state at the time of the incident and was driving rashly to impress his friends. Cops have arrested the accused teenager.
The incident took place around 5pm when the teenagers, identified as Chetan, Hemant, Nishu, Deepak and Rahul, took the car belonging to Chetan’s father, Govind Bhardwaj, for a spin around northwest Delhi’s Kanjhawala.
All of them had a few drinks before setting out on the drive, police said. The teenagers were students of a private school in Kanjhawala.
In his statement to the police, Chetan said that Hemant was driving the WagonR at a high speed, sometimes even on the wrong side of the road, to impress the others, while some of them drank at the rear seat. “As the car approached a culvert on Khera Ghevra Road, we asked Hemant to slow down but he refused to listen and tried to overtake another vehicle but lost control,” said Chetan.
The car jumped over the rails of the culvert and landed on a farm below. It then overturned. According to Chetan, he and Hemant managed to crawl out of the vehicle, but Nishu, who was sitting at the rear seat, was crushed when the WagonR overturned.
“His head was crushed under the weight of the car. The others, meanwhile, managed to get out of the vehicle and tried pulling out Nishu,” he said.
The teenagers stopped another car passing by and reached a hospital, where Nishu was declared dead on arrival while Rahul and Deepak had to be admitted after their condition deteriorated.
A police team later reached the scene and arrested Hemant. He has been charged for causing death due to negligence and under the Motor Vehicles Act, since he did not possess a driving licence.
Police are also likely to arrest Chetan’s father for allowing an unauthorised person to drive his vehicle.
