Holi festivities begin in Mathura; Know dates of Lathmar holi and other celebrations in Braj

Holi is celebrated with traditional fervour and enthusiasm across the country but Holi of Brij region is famous worldwide especially the ‘lathmar’ holi of Barsana town in Mathura.

Millions now take it to Holi fests, open-air party's, beach houses, farms to celebrate Holi. These Holi fests are organized all over the country and are packed with everything that you would need.

Holi celebrations have started in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura much before the actual festival in the rest of the country. A ‘Phoolon wali Holi’ (Holi with flowers) was the particular highlight of this festival. In Brij Mandal, the region around Mathura, Bharatpur and Agra started its celebrations a week before with a colourful, musical procession starting from the temples to the river banks and then to the Holi Gate in Mathura.

Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya was also present in the celebration. Holi is the amalgamation of old-age traditions, unique customs and modern parties, dance, and food. Holi will be celebrated from March 20-21 in 2019. This elegant battle of colours happens on streets, open parks and temples among other places. Holi experiences differ from city to city in India.

According to legends, the Mathura’s holi celebrates Lord Krishna’s childhood. Different towns in Braj Mathura celebrate different kinds of Holi. Here’s the list of Holis of Mathura:

Lathmar Holi in Barsana: The famous Lathmar Holi of Barsana will take place on March 14th, Thursday. Men from Krishna’s village Nandgaon will visit Radha’s town Barsana and they will get a colourful welcome, with sticks!

Lathmar Holi in Nandgaon: Next day, on Friday March 15, men from Barsana will return the favour and visit Nandgaon and they will also get the same treatment.

Rangbhari Ekadashi Holi in Vrindavan: On Sunday, March 17, on the occasion of Rangbhari Ekadashi Holi celebrations will take place in temples across Vrindavan. Gulal will be sprayed over pilgrims and devotees will immerse themselves in colour of devotion.

Chhadimar Holi of Gokul: In Mathura’s Gokul town where Lord Krishna spent his days as an infant and toddler, Chhadimar holi will take place on March 18, Monday. A procession of child Krishna is taken across the town after which everyone plays holi with colours and small sticks.

Huranga in Dauji Temple: Dauji Temple in Mathura’s Baldeo town is dedicated to Lord Krishna’s elder brother Balarama. Here the holi is celebrated a day after the traditional Holi and it is called Huranga. Thing get physical here as upper clothes of traditional participants are ripped off.

Rang Panchami: On the 5th day after holi, all the temples in Brij, Mathura culminate their Holi festivities with big and colourful celebrations. this year Rang Panchami falls on March 25, Monday.
